La première publication théorique de Rameau (1683-1764) fut le Traité de l’harmonie, en 1722. D’emblée, ce fut un coup de maître, qui assura à son auteur une renommée européenne. Reprenant les proportions intervalliques sous forme de rapports numériques connus depuis l’Antiquité, Rameau en tire la primauté de l’accord parfait, en tant que principe générateur. Il établit les renversements des accords à partir de cet accord originel, ainsi que le phénomène de la dissonance. Accomplissant un pas de géant dans la théorie du système tonal, le Traité de l’harmonie représente sans conteste une nouvelle façon de concevoir et d’enseigner la composition musicale. The very first book of musical theory written by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) was the Treatise on harmony, in 1722. It was a masterpiece which brang to his author a steady European fame. Starting from the intervallic proportions as mathematical proportions, discovered from the Antiquity, Rameau deduce the power of the major perfect chord like a generative principle. He states the inversions of chords from the original triad, and established the phenomenon of dissonance. This giant step in the theory of the tonal system is the birth of a new method in analyzing and composing music.
