Francesco Cavalli is credited with inventing the opera genre as we know it. Readying Cavalli's Operas for the Stage considers, from various points of view, the current renaissance that Cavalli's works are enjoying. This collection of essays explores the multiple issues involved when transforming an operatic manuscript into a performance, and although focused on Cavalli's works, much of the book's material can be applied to other operatic repertoires. This volume contains a detailed examination of the text, music, intellectual context, and reception of Giasone, the work that made Cavalli famous, as well as essays on manuscripts; editions; production/performance; and the composer's operas.
